plumbing solution to halt global warming

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

calling all plumbers! scientists have proposed a novel solution to halt global warming. a system where gigantic pipes up to 200m long are plumbed into the depths of the ocean, where they would pump nutrient rich water to the surface, in turn encouraging plankton blooms.  which would in turn take carbon dioxide out of the air and encourage cloud formation.  Hence saving the world from the evil threat of global warming! Go superplumber! (see the whole article here)

Heatherwick wins British Pavilion in Shanghai

Friday, September 21st, 2007

Thomas Heatherwick with Adams Kara Taylor, Atelier Ten and Casson Mannhas won the Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s competition to design the British Pavilion at the 2010 Shanghai Expo. The design is a big cube that has LED lights fixed to the end of steel rods completely covering the cubes surface.  The LED’s will form images based upon events relating to UK culture. The project bares a striking resemblance to Heathwick’s Sitooterie II.  Well we all like to re-use and re-cycle in this current day and age!  Good one Thomas!

Oslo Architecture Triennale – Culture of Risk

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

The Oslo Architecture Triennale takes place in Oslo next week beginning the 27th of September.  It has a great line up of speakers for the conference on the 28th including; Cecile Balmond (arup), Michael Rock (2X4), Alejandro Zaero Polo (FOA), Kjetil Trædal Thorsen (Snøhetta AS), and  Ellen van Loon (OMA). Curated by Gary Bates (Spacegroup) the conference follows the theme of Risk…  ” It is time once again for Norway to take an enormous risk, to declare independence from another union not of its own construction. The risk of not doing so is greater – evolution will stagnate, new ideas will remain below the surface, and we will be defined by the status quo.” Accompanying the one day conference are a series of exhibitions, seminars and even a pecha kucha.

Hadid wins design medal……

Tuesday, September 18th, 2007

Zaha Hadid last night recieved this years London Design Medal in a ceremony at Royal festival Hall, later on a guest got stabbed in the face with a bottle……. hopefully the two incidents weren’t related…..but with the current media blitz enveloping (wrapping?!) zaha it seems quite feasible some peoples patience with the Iraqi born starchitect and her 250 strong army of rhino modellers might be beginning to fray……. Her current exhibition at the Design Museum is worth a look though.
